Negotiations of the AfCFTA Investment Protocol in full swing

Since December 2021, when state parties to the AfCFTA began discussion rounds on the zero-draft text to raise preliminary concerns on it, they have since had rounds of negotiations between March and June 2022. The negotiations are currently still ongoing, with each iteration of the draft text integrating innovative provisions on key investment governance issues.

The states parties had two further rounds of negotiations in September 2022, aiming to propose a final text for adoption soon. To achieve this timeline, another meeting between the negotiators is planned in the coming weeks.

Once concluded, the investment protocol presents a great opportunity for convergence and coherence in investment regulation in Africa.
